Is learning to drive an automatic vehicle easier?

The answer is not a simple yes or no. While it may seem less complicated, because you don’t have to deal with shifting gears, you still need to master all the fundamental driving skills necessary for safely navigating the roads. The absence of gears might simplify some aspects of driving, but it also requires a strong understanding of vehicle control, highway code and driving techniques on various road and road conditions.

My school car is also adapted with a left foot accelerator, allowing for easier control for those who require it. This was fitted by N-tec Mobility Ltd.

Additionally, a Veigel Ltd steering ball that enhances manoeuvrability, along with secondary controls to ensure safety and convenience is available.

Working with The AA and the Motability Foundation I also teach in their specially adapted vehicles, known as space drive.

Following a referral from your Regional Driving Assessment Centre (RDAC) or other case worker, we work together to discuss your unique requirements and circumstances.

Together, we’ll develop a personalised plan designed to help you safely and effectively get back on the road, restoring your mobility and freedom.

How long will it take to pass?

The average number of hours is 40-45. It of course depends on your progress throughout your lessons. Some people will need less than this.

Is it easier to pass in an automatic car?

No, whilst it may seem easier because you do not have to physically change gear, the technical aspects are the same.

Do I need to have passed my theory test?

No, but we strongly recommend that you pass it soon after you start your practical lessons. Applying the theory to the road is an important part of the learning process.

What if I have a learning disability?

Speak to your instructor about your needs and how they can best help you achieve your goals. The requirements and standards required to pass your test are the same but adaptations can be made.

What if I qualify for Motability and need adaptations made to the car

Adjustments can be made. You would coordinate with Motability to make sure that the car is suitable for you.

What do I need to learn to pass?

Can you book my test for me?

No, from the spring of 2026 you will need to book and manage your own test. Details on how to book and manage your test can be found on the Gov.uk site

Will I get to drive on the first lessons?

Yes. Your instructor will take you to an appropriate area to go through the basics and it is also an opportunity to get to know your instructor and the vehicle your lessons will be conducted in.

How do I know I am ready for my test?

When you do not need prompts from the instructor

You do not make serious or dangerous mistakes

You can pass mock tests

You can manage your nerves

Your instructor agrees you’re ready.

Can I use your car on my test?

Yes, if you have master all the required skills and your instructor agrees you are ready.

I would not hesitate to recommend Lynn as a driving instructor for your young person. My son started his lessons with Lynn soon after his 17th birthday. All arrangements for lessons are app based and was led by our son, payments were easily transferred.
